Jumpin’ July | Lindy Hop Workshop

Glasgow Lindyhoppers are delighted to bring you Swing Patrol teachers Maddie Dailly and James David Smith for a lindy hop workshop this July!

Designed for intermediate dancers and above, this one-day workshop aims to give you a strong foundation and some fun moves to kick your social dancing up a notch.

In the morning we’ll focus on the elusive concept of frame.
What is it? How do we use it? How can it improve your leading and following skills?
We’ll work on exercises to give you a better sense of what feels good, and progress on to more fancy moves to test your new skills out.

In the afternoon we’ll throw lots of moves at you to jazz up your social dancing repertoire – and some solid technique too!

When: Saturday 22nd July 11am-4pm
Where: Sloans Ballroom, Argyle St
Cost: £25

Registrations are open via DanceCloud: https://glasgowlindy.dancecloud.com/#/events/16674

If you’re signing up with a partner one person will need to book and pay for both people at the same time.

James has been dancing since 2010. He’s competed and social danced around Europe and the US. Maddie has danced in more dark, sweaty jazz clubs than she can remember; she started Southside Swing in Glasgow and occasionally taught for GLH before moving back south. Both former members of Swing Patrol’s Skyliners troupe, Maddie and James teach together every week at Swing Patrol Peckham.

Free swing dancing taster class – Monday 5th June!

Even if the sun isn’t out you can add a warm happy glow to your summer nights with a free swing dancing taster class with Glasgow Lindyhoppers.

Lindy hop came out of the jazz clubs and ballrooms of Harlem in the 1920s. It was popular in the 1930s and 40s and is still danced all over the world today!

In this free taster class we will take you through some simple, fun moves to get you dancing straight away.

When: 7pm, Monday 5th June
Where: Blackfriars, Merchant City
How much: Free!

No experience required, this class is aimed at complete beginners. No need to bring a partner but feel free to bring friends!

WARNING: lindy hop is a highly addictive dance. Proceed with caution (and lots of fun).

Shim Sham class and Monday social!

After our awesome live band last week, join us this Monday for another special night!

Just a few days after World Lindy Hop Day you can join GLH to learn Frankie Manning’s Shim Sham. The Shim Sham is a lindy hop stroll, which means you dance solo. Our very own Claire Craig will be teaching this one and it’s suitable for all levels of dancer.

7pm – Doors open
7.30pm – Shim Sham class (beginners welcome)
8.30pm – Social

Blackfriars Basement, Merchant City

£5 entry or £3 just for the social

If you’ve ever been interested in performing with GLH we often use the Shim Sham, so it’s a great routine to know. If performing isn’t your thing then it’s still really fun to learn, and you will find it danced all over the world.

Balboa classes in Glasgow!

Balboa classes are back on Tuesday nights!

Glasgow Balboa are bringing you another 6 week block of beginner and improver balboa classes. And for the first week of term we are offering you the chance to try this awesome dance for free!

When: Tuesday 2nd May
Time: 7pm
Where: Bacchus, Glassford Street
How much: Free!

Balboa is first thought to have been danced around 1915 and was most popular in the 1930s and 1940s. Like lindy hop, it is a descendant of charleston, and as such you’ll find lots of lindy hoppers who also dance balboa, although balboa dancers come from other dance backgrounds too.

Danced in a closer embrace than lindy hop, we love to develop and build on this new type of connection and movement. This eventually leads into a wonderful world of swooshy moves and fancy footwork variations!

We swap leading and following roles throughout the class, so be prepared to dance with lots of new people. For more information on the dance, what to wear etc. check out the pinned post on the Glasgow Balboa group page.

Do fun stuff for free and come and try this lovely dance!
